Snowmobilers say let it snow, let it snow (and make it about 25 degrees)
Whether bolting straight across the ice of Albert Lea Lake or bobbing left and right through the trails of Myre-Big Island State Park, one thing is for sure: Operating a snowmobile is an addictive endeavor."That's it. There you go. That's why," said Dirk DeVries, vice president of the Freeborn County Trail Association.DeVries and four members of the Freeborn County Trail Association went riding for two hours Thursday with Tribune photographer Brie Cohen and me. The association maintains 250 miles of groomed trails in Freeborn County. The trails run to almost all of the cities in the county and connect to trails in neighboring counties. A person could ride a snowmobile from Albert Lea to Canada on the state's trails. In all, there are about 20,400 groomed snowmobile trails in Minnesota.Those trails also connect to the trails at Myre-Big Island State Park.

A drummer, A DANCER, and a singer play traditional Egyptian music at a Jesuit center in Minya unlike anything Ive heard before. Having made the trip out here from the US possessed by a cliché yet genuinely felt identity crisis, I found myself in a nation doing some soul searching as well. Was this coincidental, or is this part of a larger pattern? And why is it that both musical and visual folklore are now being explored, revived, redeveloped and repackaged on an unprecedented scale? Is it a local fad inspired by foreign interest the way Sufism has become? When Im faced with the fact that some of the most popular music videos are taking on traditional Egyptian personas like the fellaha, aalma (folkloric belly dancer), and the Hind-Rostom-type seductress coffee shop waitress to go with songs like the flirtatious Umma Naeema (Mother Naeema) or Mashrabsh El Shay (Dont Drink Tea), Im convinced that the trend isnt simply another excuse to show more skin.
Local tennis: Naples Bay Resort hosting touring camps
The Club at Naples Bay Resort will play host to the FILA Touring Camps in a daily “tennis retreat style" format, Jan. 28 – 30. Created by tennis legend Cliff Drysdale, the exclusive FILA Touring Camps showcase a combination of learning, match play, game strategy, team competition and camaraderie. The Aussie-style clinics are for adult tennis enthusiasts of all levels. A team of accomplished touring tennis professionals will team up with the Naples Bay Resort pros to conduct a series of fully interactive clinics that will cover ground strokes, volleys, doubles tactics, overhead and serving techniques, as well as match play and game strategies. The schedule of events will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and includes a morning session of on-court drills, poolside lunch and an afternoon session of team competition and match play.

The depleted Coalition ranks were in the House of Representatives' chamber, doing their best to hold the Rudd Government to account over its controversial appointment of former Victorian premier Steve Bracks to head a review of the car industry. Shadow treasurer Malcolm Turnbull moved a censure motion against his counterpart Wayne Swan, prompting a series of votes in the chamber that the Coalition never had any chance of winning because the Government overwhelmingly has the numbers. But in opposition, it's solidarity that is most important. And on that sunny Canberra morning, Alexander Downer and Mark Vaile - two former senior Howard ministers now relegated to the backbench - weren't in the chamber. Instead, they were soaking up the sun at the Royal Canberra Golf Club - one of Australia's most exclusive courses.

He's a bigger man because he's smaller than he used to be. Huckabee's triumph over his own imperfections makes him a refreshing alternative to Romney, who comes across as too perfect, and Giuliani, whose campaign slogan is nobody's perfect and who has done altogether too well in staying on message. Weight loss has some policy benefits, too. At a time when Republicans don't have much else to say to Americans about health care, Huck offers his own story as a do-it-yourself substitute for a credible health-care plan. Yet, as Huckabee rises from curiosity to contender, a potential downside of downsizing becomes clear. The man is better off than he was 110 pounds ago, but does Mike Huckabee have too much riding on whether he can stay thin? Appearance is an issue for anyone in the public eye.
