Valley collector-car auctions wind down

A frenetic week of Arizona collector-car auctions winds down today with the laid-back Silver Auction, where regular folk come to buy and sell fun cars and trucks. From vintage Fords, hot rods and American cruisers to late-model luxury cars, Silver focuses more on car enthusiasts than big-time collectors. "We encourage the car hobbyists more than anything else," said Dave Silver, the nephew of the Spokane, Wash., auction's founder and president Mitch Silver. Silver conducts about 30 auctions per year nationwide. .

Professor's accused killer could face death

Oakland police then went to Dennis' home on Hansom Drive and found evidence of a bloody confrontation.

Police said Thomas admitted to the slaying and said he was trying to gain financially when he arrived at Dennis' home Saturday. He also said he drove to San Mateo County in hopes of dumping Dennis' body, according to police.

Dennis met Thomas three decades ago when Dennis was mentoring inner-city youths in Oakland. The relationship continued after the program. Sources said they had a sexual relationship that turned violent.

While Dennis continued teaching, both .

Getting Defensive

In the long run, Nokia is determined to push Qualcomm out of the royalty business. It's not an imminent danger, but it's something to consider.

Samberg: Qualcomm has a lot of technology other companies need. Don't count it out.

Next, I'm a big believer in a developing middle class internationally. Last year, I recommended two Brazilian home builders, Brascan Residential Properties and Gafisa, which I like again. I've also got two advertising stocks. The first, Focus Media, is listed in the U.S. but operates in China. It came public in 2005 and has about $450 million in revenue. Its original business was putting liquid-crystal-display advertisements in commercial office buildings. That's still half its business. In China, the ad business is at a different stage of development than in the U.S.

Curt Cavin: IRL & Formula One Q&A

They didn't even let her drive a car during the test earlier this month to see what it's like. How does one overcome this catch 22? (Dave, Durham, N.C.)
Answer: Shes no different than a lot of other drivers facing an inability to show their skills. But at least Sarah is in the seat for now. The best thing she can do for the road courses is show well on the ovals. If she does that, D&R will leave her in the car.

Question: In regard to AJ4 having a fast time at Daytona: I imagine that missing the chicane might have a bearing on his best lap time. (George, Savannah, Ga.)
Answer: Yeah, that probably had something to do with it!

Question: What is your opinion on why when Sarah Fisher first came to the IRL several years ago that she didn't get anywhere near the media attention that Danica Patrick did? I also find it very curious that during Danica's first year, Sarah is shipped off to some low-level West Coast NASCAR series, any opinion on that? Thanks much.

Magical trip through the mousehole

Mary McCarthy's "A Closer Look" issues an affectionate challenge for children to "look closer" and look yet again. It's a philosophical picture-book idea: vision is more than a matter of sight. It requires patience and perspective. So a big black circle on a red field might be any number of things - and as McCarthy pulls farther and farther back, she invites guessing games. (The black dot belongs to a ladybug.) The same goes for a flower and a hummingbird. But my favorite images are those McCarthy saves for last, when we reel back far enough to see bug, flower, and bird, and farther still to view the summer garden of which they are all a part.

She accomplishes this in paper collages that are bright, bold, child-friendly, and child-engaging. The youngest naturalists will naturally love this.

Innocence vs. Experience in Chicago

If Rush decided to stay in the draft, hes clearly not a first-round selection. A general manager with a pick in the middle to late portion of the second round may have to ask himself the following question: Do I take Rush and hope he becomes what I think he could be, or do I grab a guy like Alan Anderson, who played four years at Michigan State and is possibly ready to contribute?

Anderson had another solid performance in Thursdays opener, finishing with 11 points and four steals in a losing effort as Team One defeated Team Four, 88-78.

As one personnel guy put it, Anderson doesnt rate a 10 in any one particular category. He simply piles up sevens and eights across the board. His ability to see time at the one, two and three in college, and here at the camp, bodes well for his professional future.
